To meet the broader project, the consortium is working on several fronts to connect community information users to sources of government information. We are gathering together a number of individual communities and individual data holders around Z39.50-compatible distributed networks that permit data sharing within and between networks.
In this project we have built one of these networks to support the Sustainable Communities Initiative (SCI). This work included the following steps and deliverables:
- Set up a Z39.50 compatible server for the Sustainable Communities
Initiative and connect to it the metadata for 7
databases containing information relevant to community-based planning
and decision making.
- Create a Metadata
Search Tool for the SCI site using CEONet's API.
- Create a Web
GIS Interface to view selected map layers that might also be shared
at the SCI site.
- Package these search and view tools as
a bundle that could be inserted into any web site, and actually insert
it into DIAND's
Northern Information Network (NIN) as an example of how this would
work.
